ARTC upgrades reduce Sydney–Melbourne freight times

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has completed a major maintenance and upgrade program along the Sydney–Melbourne rail corridor. This initiative, executed during a coordinated shutdown known as a ‘super possession’, has resulted in an 88-minute reduction in freight journey times.

Over 1,000 rail workers addressed 200 sites to repair 497 defects, renew more than 14 kilometres of rail, and remove temporary speed restrictions. The works also included track resurfacing, level crossing renewals, bridge and culvert repairs, and signalling improvements. These upgrades are part of the nearly $2.8 billion Network Investment Program, a joint effort between the ARTC and the Australian Government to enhance the reliability and capacity of the national rail network.

Additionally, the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has launched the Safely Access the Rail Corridor (SARC) training. This online, self-paced course aims to harmonise safety training across Australia by providing a nationally recognised competency (TLIF0020). The program is designed to improve workforce mobility by allowing workers to complete foundational safety training once, supplemented only by network-specific requirements when moving between different rail networks.
