ArtCraft releases seven open-source Adobe alternatives

Developer Brandon Thomas and the ArtCraft team have released a suite of seven free, open-source applications designed to serve as alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud. The suite includes PhotoCraft (Photoshop), VectorCraft (Illustrator), FilmCraft (Premiere Pro), LightCraft (Lightroom), EffectCraft (After Effects), DesignCraft (InDesign), and PrintCraft (Acrobat Pro).

Developed using the Rust programming language and significantly accelerated by Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 AI model, the applications utilize a “clean-room” reconstruction method. This approach aims to replicate the functionality, interfaces, and keyboard shortcuts of the original software without using Adobe’s proprietary source code. The tools are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with WebAssembly support allowing them to run directly in web browsers.

While the project has gained significant traction on platforms like GitHub and Reddit, the applications are currently in an early alpha stage. Users have noted various bugs and missing features compared to the professional-grade Adobe products. The developer intends to fund the project through paid access to ArtCraft’s proprietary AI visual tools. Legal experts have noted that while the code is original, the high degree of visual similarity to Adobe’s interface may present potential copyright challenges.
