ArtCraft project launches free AI-driven alternatives to Adobe and Microsoft

Software engineer Brandon Thomas has launched ArtCraft, an open-source project that uses AI-assisted coding to create free alternatives to major commercial software suites. Using Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 and the Rust programming language, Thomas is developing a series of applications designed to replicate the functionality and interfaces of industry standards.

The ArtCraft suite includes tools like PhotoCraft (an alternative to Adobe Photoshop), PdfCraft (Adobe Acrobat), and various applications targeting Microsoft Office, such as WordCraft, DeckCraft, and GridCraft. The project aims to provide cross-platform support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

While the software is currently in development—with some tools described as alpha versions—it has gained significant traction on platforms like GitHub. Thomas, a 15-year industry veteran, stated that the project is intended to be a long-term endeavor rather than a temporary release, potentially challenging the subscription-based models used by major tech companies.
