ARTE releases documentary series on disco's global rise

ARTE is broadcasting a three‑part documentary series called “Disco – Soundtrack eines Aufbruchs”. The series traces the birth of disco music in the early 1970s, starting in Black, Latin and gay clubs of New York City and following its rapid spread to clubs such as Studio 54 and mainstream success worldwide. Director Grace Chapman guides viewers through the genre’s musical evolution, its role in promoting inclusion and safe‑space culture, and its lasting influence on popular music.

The programme features interviews with key figures including Victor Willis of the Village People, R&B singer Thelma Houston, disco pioneer George McCrae and celebrated performer Donna Summer. All three hour‑long episodes are available for streaming on ARTE from 2 August through 31 August 2026.
