Artemis Ignatiou to present ‘Eleftheroi’ in Messolonghi

Choreographer Artemis Ignatiou and the ART Dance Theatre will present the dance-theatre production ‘Eleftheroi’ (The Free) at the Messolonghi Open Air Theatre on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Organized by the Region of Western Greece, the performance is inspired by the historical Exodus of Messolonghi.

The production utilizes a contemporary choreographic style, combining the movement of twelve dancers and actors with the narration of Kostas Piperidis. The performance integrates the literary works of Dionysios Solomos from ‘The Free Besieged’ with an original musical composition by Giannis Tseimadas to create a ‘living landscape of memory.’

Ignatiou stated that the work aims to approach the heroic Exodus through the power of the body, seeking to connect historical memory with contemporary artistic expression. The project intends to highlight the human dimension and the intense emotions behind the difficult decisions made by those besieged in Messolonghi.
