Artemisia unveils monument to the 1822 Declaration of Mystras
A monument dedicated to the historic Declaration of June 14, 1822, by the military and political leaders of the former Pisina villages of Mystras was unveiled in Artemisia on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
Crafted from white Dionysus marble, the monument is designed in the shape of an open book. Its surfaces feature the text of the historical Declaration and the names of the local chieftains involved in the revolutionary struggle during the Greek War of Independence.
The project was funded by Panagiotis V. Lathouris, a lawyer based in the United States, as a donation in memory of his parents, Vasileios P. Lathouris and Georgia P. Chandrinou. The monument was created by artist Kostas Dousis, following an initial proposal by retired Major Elias Lazaros.
The unveiling ceremony included the Mayor of Kalamata, Thanasis Vasilopoulos, the donor, the President of the Artemisia Community, Panagiotis Dionysopoulos, and Archpriest Alexios Aronis. During the event, wreaths were laid, and the national anthem was performed.
