Arthouse Houston to transform historic Garden Oaks Theater into Arts & Film Center
The nonprofit Arthouse Houston is moving forward with plans to purchase the historic Garden Oaks Theater in Houston, preventing its imminent demolition. The organization intends to transform the nearly 80-year-old landmark into a new Arts & Film Center, with a grand opening projected for 2028.
Following a months-long fundraising campaign that began in February, the nonprofit has raised over $2.8 million. While still approximately $400,000 short of its immediate $3.1 million goal, Arthouse Houston plans to close on the $7.1 million property through seller financing shortly after Labor Day. The property was previously sold by Grace Church to the Houston-based Heights Investment Fund.
The redevelopment will occur in phases. Phase two will focus on restoring the historic marquee, neon blade sign, ornamental grand staircase, and original murals, while also constructing classrooms, production studios, and screening spaces. The project aims to support the film industry and arts community in Texas and beyond.
