Arthur Fils defeats Luca Van Assche at ATP 500 Tokyo

Arthur Fils, ranked ninth in the world, defeated compatriot Luca Van Assche 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo. This victory follows Fils' successful run through the qualifying rounds.

Fils explained that he was forced to play in the qualifiers due to administrative issues regarding his registration. He noted that his team made the decision to enter the tournament after his US Open appearance, but the registration deadline had passed by six to seven hours. Fils described the situation as one of his biggest challenges this year.

Following this win, Fils is scheduled to face either Kei Nishikori or Frances Tiafoe in the second round.
