Arthur Hayes warns of AI bubble and potential multi-trillion-dollar US bailouts
Arthur Hayes, managing partner of Maelstrom, has characterized the artificial intelligence industry as a “clear bubble.” He predicts that the massive investments in AI data centers could lead to significant debt defaults within the next 12 to 18 months, potentially impacting the broader financial system and insurance policyholders.
Hayes suggests that if these debts become unmanageable, the United States government might intervene with a multi-trillion-dollar bailout to maintain social stability. Such a massive injection of liquidity, driven by increased money supply, could subsequently flow into the digital asset markets.
Despite his bearish outlook on the current AI boom, Hayes is investing in the potential aftermath. Through Flop Labs, he is developing the FLOP blockchain network, which aims to facilitate an “agentic commerce” economy. This project seeks to utilize the surplus, low-cost computing resources that may remain after the AI investment bubble bursts, allowing AI agents to perform autonomous economic activities.
