Arthur's Pass campsite damaged by off-road vehicles

The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) has issued a public appeal for information following significant damage caused by four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles at the Klondyke Corner Campsite in Arthur’s Pass National Park.

Aerial photography reveals extensive damage, including deep tyre tracks, soil compaction, and wide ruts. DOC Operations Manager Leeann Ellis stated that the incident, believed to have occurred around 4 pm on 1 August, has destroyed local plants and increased the site's susceptibility to erosion and weed infestation. The campsite is a popular destination that hosts thousands of visitors annually, including participants in the Coast to Coast race.

DOC staff are currently working with police to identify the vehicles involved. Driving off formed roads and damaging natural or historic features in a national park is illegal and can result in heavy fines or prosecution.
