Artibonite region in Haiti faces surge in gang violence

The Artibonite department in Haiti is experiencing a significant escalation in gang-related violence. In Saint-Marc, armed groups launched an attack around 3:00 AM on Monday, October 19, 2026, reportedly seizing control of parts of the city center, including the Morne Fort and Crête-à-Pierrot areas.

Simultaneously, in Petite-Rivière de l’Artibonite, the “Gran Grif” gang, based in Savien, has intensified its activities since Sunday, October 18. Local residents fear the gang intends to target the local police station. Armed men have reportedly been attempting to expand their control around the city center, erecting barricades in several sectors such as Rue Capois and Quatorzième to restrict movement and security interventions.

While a reliable human toll for the Saint-Marc attack has not yet been confirmed, the ongoing instability is causing widespread fear among residents regarding the safety of their families, public infrastructure, and the continuity of economic activities.
