Artificial insemination technology used to optimize livestock breeding

Artificial insemination (AI) is being utilized as a critical tool to enhance livestock productivity and genetic quality. The technology allows farmers to access desirable traits, such as improved milk production and growth, by using semen from superior males without the need to maintain a breeding bull on-site. One bull can potentially serve over 50,000 cows annually, facilitating the widespread distribution of high-quality genetics.

In Nebraska, researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research, Extension, and Education Center are conducting a study to optimize breeding efficacy in beef heifers. The project, a collaboration with 2Bar Ranches, investigates whether using multi-sire semen—combining sperm from three different bulls—can increase pregnancy rates compared to single-sire semen. The study also examines the performance differences between fresh and frozen semen to determine the most effective storage and application methods for expanding cattle herds.
