Artificial intelligence accelerates biodiversity monitoring in Brazil

Artificial intelligence is significantly enhancing the monitoring of forests and endangered species in Brazil. By utilizing automated tools, researchers can process vast amounts of images, audio, and geographic data much faster than traditional manual methods.

Computer vision technology is being used to analyze images from camera traps to identify specific species and individual patterns, such as the fur markings of jaguars. Experts note that while AI provides immense speed—processing thousands of records that previously required manual sorting—human validation remains essential to ensure accuracy and prevent counting errors.

In addition to visual data, technology is being deployed through satellite mapping and bioacoustics to combat deforestation and forest fires, providing a multi-layered approach to environmental management from space to the forest floor.
