Artificial intelligence advances dental X-ray diagnostics

Advancements in artificial intelligence are transforming dental diagnostics through specialized imaging software and automated radiographic analysis.

Researchers at the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto campus have developed an AI system using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to identify teeth and detect cavities in X-rays. According to professor Alessandra Alaniz Macedo, the system utilizes supervised learning, training on thousands of previously analyzed radiographs to correlate specific image characteristics with lesions. This technology aims to streamline diagnostic workflows and assist dentists in radiographic analysis.

In the broader commercial market, AI-driven platforms like Overjet are being utilized by dental practices and organizations to provide structured, audit-ready radiograph analysis. These tools focus on automated detection paired with clinician confirmation to support treatment planning and improve patient outcomes through clearer, faster diagnoses.
