Artificial intelligence existential risks spark global debate
Global leaders, politicians, and technology experts are increasingly debating the existential risks posed by artificial intelligence. High-profile figures, including Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, and Elon Musk, have expressed concerns regarding the potential dangers of the technology.
Dario Amodei noted that AI is advancing through a process known as “recursive self-improvement,” where systems gain the ability to develop the next generation of AI. There are concerns that autonomous systems could potentially disrupt the internet within 12 months.
In response to these risks, the European Union, the United Nations, and other international entities have called for a deceleration in AI development. Due to the closed nature of proprietary models from major American companies, the scientific community and independent auditors face challenges in evaluating these systems. Consequently, over 100 experts, including Geoffrey Hinton, have called for fully independent audits and increased transparency to mitigate potential threats to humanity.
