Artificial Intelligence impact on human cognitive independence

Recent research and philosophical inquiries are examining whether artificial intelligence fosters human empowerment or creates cognitive dependency. A study published in ‘Academy of Management Proceedings’ by researchers Mauna Mo and Wenhao Lu distinguishes between two patterns of AI usage: an independence-preserving pattern and a dependency pattern.

In the independence-preserving model, humans use AI as a partner to deepen thought, questioning outputs and testing logic to expand knowledge. Conversely, the dependency model involves humans accepting AI-generated answers without critical engagement. The study, which involved 113 manager-employee dyads, found that the independence-preserving approach is linked to higher levels of creativity, whereas total reliance on the technology fails to produce the same creative impact.

Beyond productivity, the discussion extends to the broader civilizational impact of AI. Experts question whether the technology will produce more aware and effective individuals or contribute to a decline in mental faculties, decision-making autonomy, and psychological independence.
