Artificial intelligence impact on labor markets and job automation
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence presents unprecedented challenges for economists. Because AI is a general-purpose technology, its long-term effects on total production and the labor market remain difficult to predict. A central question is whether AI will drive a significant increase in total output or simply shift the balance of production factors by replacing human labor with capital.
While AI has reshaped analytical and office-based roles, certain professions remain highly resistant to automation. Research focusing on human capabilities—such as physical strength, endurance, reaction speed, spatial orientation, multitasking, and hazard recognition—identifies jobs where the human element is indispensable.
Key roles identified as resistant to AI include firefighters, pilots, engineers, assembly technicians, and construction workers. These positions require high levels of human judgment, rapid decision-making, and physical responsibility that current AI agents are unlikely to replicate in the near future.
