Artificial Intelligence impacts medical training and commerce in Greece

Artificial intelligence is driving significant shifts across multiple sectors in Greece, specifically within medical education and the financial landscape.

In the medical field, experts from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) highlight a growing concern regarding the training of new doctors. Research suggests that heavy reliance on AI for diagnostics and treatment decisions could lead to ‘never-skilling,’ where medical professionals fail to develop essential independent clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills. To combat this, experts propose a revised educational strategy focusing on physical examination, observation, and human communication alongside new technological competencies.

Simultaneously, the Athens Mastercard Innovation Forum 2026 addressed the rise of ‘Agentic Commerce,’ where AI moves beyond providing information to taking direct actions for consumers. Mastercard executives noted that electronic payment usage in Greece has surpassed the European average, generating over 400 million euros in annual tax revenue. The company is focusing on expanding digital tools like ‘Click to Pay’ and enhancing consumer benefits to support the evolving digital economy.
