Artificial intelligence impacts paving engineering and human critical thinking

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into various sectors, ranging from civil engineering to cognitive skill development. In Brazil, the paving industry is utilizing AI for practical applications such as traffic monitoring. Cameras equipped with AI can now identify and classify vehicles, improving the efficiency of volumetric counting and reducing reliance on manual labor.

Experts emphasize that while AI can enhance predictive models and data analysis, it should be viewed as a tool to support technical knowledge rather than a replacement for it. Felipe Cava, a paving specialist, notes that while predictive modeling has existed for decades, new AI techniques are expected to refine these processes.

Simultaneously, the rise of AI presents challenges to human critical thinking. Research from Common Sense Media indicates that 70% of surveyed adolescents use AI for schoolwork, with nearly two-thirds admitting to transferring part of their critical thinking to the technology. Experts suggest that the human advantage in the AI era lies in the ability to interpret information, question responses, and make complex decisions that technology cannot handle alone.
