Biohub and Google launch $1.8B AI initiative to create virtual cells

Biohub, an organization supported by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, has expanded its Virtual Biology Initiative. This international effort aims to use artificial intelligence to create virtual human cells. By simulating how cells react to drugs, diseases, and other interventions, researchers hope to accelerate medical discovery and reduce the need for initial physical laboratory experiments.

The initiative represents a combined $1.8 billion in funding, data, computing power, and measurement technologies. Key collaborators include Google DeepMind, Meta, Isomorphic Labs, the US Department of Energy, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The project focuses on building the necessary infrastructure, such as larger datasets and advanced microscopy, to train predictive biological models.

Separately, various educational and social sectors are addressing AI integration. In Paraguay and Mexico, institutions are hosting workshops and training for researchers and students to use AI ethically. In Argentina, programs are teaching older adults to use AI for daily tasks and memory preservation. Meanwhile, academic discussions in Uruguay and Spain emphasize the need for critical thinking and ethical guidelines to ensure AI serves as a pedagogical tool rather than a replacement for human reasoning.
