Artificial intelligence poses both existential risks and economic shifts
Experts and industry professionals are highlighting the dual nature of rapid artificial intelligence development, focusing on both existential risks and economic transformations.
Former and current employees from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have raised concerns regarding the potential for advanced, autonomous systems to escape human control. These experts warn of hypothetical scenarios such as large-scale cyberattacks, autonomous weaponry, and risks involving biotechnology that could pose threats to human existence.
On the economic front, research suggests that AI could significantly boost global economic output by 32 percent by 2030. While this growth may increase average wages by 9.7 percent, the impact on the workforce is uneven. Nearly one in five knowledge workers could face unemployment in rapid-adoption scenarios, with computer programming and customer support being among the most affected fields. However, many researchers argue that AI is more likely to transform job responsibilities and increase productivity rather than eliminate entire professions.
