Artificial Intelligence poses challenges to judicial systems

Legal authorities in Bangladesh and Nigeria have raised concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on the judiciary. In Bangladesh, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman warned that AI could pose significant challenges, particularly if used to write judgments or imitate voices, which could risk the integrity of justice. The minister highlighted government plans to digitize judicial processes, including the potential for digital appearances of accused persons to save time and resources.

In Nigeria, legal professionals in Ibadan have warned that using fictitious, AI-generated case citations constitutes professional misconduct. Oluseun Abimbola, a former Oyo Attorney-General, noted that presenting unverified AI citations aims to confuse courts and breaches professional conduct rules. He stated that judges may impose sanctions or refer such matters to disciplinary committees to deter negligent behavior and ensure that judicial conscience is not bypassed by technology.
