Artificial Intelligence Transforming Journalism in the Dominican Republic and Beyond

Aníbal de Castro, founder‑director of Diario Libre, delivered a keynote at the Colegio Dominicano de Periodistas in Santo Domingo, arguing that artificial intelligence (AI) will reshape newsrooms but will not replace the journalist’s role of investigation, verification and ethical judgement. He highlighted AI’s usefulness for transcribing interviews, analysing large document sets and detecting patterns in investigations such as the Panama Papers, while warning that AI‑generated images and videos amplify disinformation.

A complementary opinion piece stresses that technology and journalism need not be adversaries. While AI can draft reports in seconds and process massive data, only human reporters can provide context, empathy and moral accountability. The author urges media organisations to harness AI as a tool for speed and depth while preserving the profession’s core values of truth‑seeking and public service.
