Artificial intelligence transforms construction management and climate mitigation

Artificial intelligence is transforming the construction industry by improving project management and addressing climate change. In project management, AI helps mitigate risks, delays, and cost overruns by analyzing dispersed data from blueprints, budgets, and reports to detect patterns and inconsistencies. This shift from reactive to anticipatory management is critical, as an IMF study indicates only 2.5% of construction companies consistently complete projects on time and within budget.

Furthermore, AI serves as an enabling technology for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (CCAM) throughout the construction lifecycle. Given that the construction sector is responsible for 37% of global CO2 emissions and 28% of global energy consumption, AI can facilitate decarbonization, energy efficiency, and circular economy practices. However, the net positive impact of AI depends on ensuring that emission savings outweigh the computational energy costs required to run these digital systems.
