Artificial intelligence transforms dental diagnostics

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing dentistry by moving the field from simple data documentation toward data-driven medical knowledge. Algorithms can now analyze X-rays in seconds, identifying minute caries lesions that are difficult for the human eye to detect.

Prof. Dr. Falk Schwendicke, Director of the Polyclinic for Tooth Preservation and Periodontology at the University of Munich, notes that while AI provides a standardized second analysis to make diagnostics more objective, it does not act as an autopilot. The responsibility for medical classification and therapeutic decisions remains with the dentist.

This technological shift allows for earlier risk detection and more precise prognoses by linking data from various sources, including digital X-rays, intraoral scanners, and electronic patient records. However, the ability to detect more findings raises new clinical questions regarding whether every early lesion requires immediate treatment or if observation is a better option.
