Artificial intelligence transforms news selection and audience engagement

The rise of artificial intelligence is fundamentally altering the journalism landscape, affecting both how news is selected and how audiences consume it. A study published in Nature Communications highlights that AI systems possess an exploratory capacity superior to humans, capable of discovering strategies and patterns that machines can then transmit to people. This shifts the role of AI from a mere tool to an active participant in the discovery and organization of information.

Simultaneously, news websites are facing a decline in digital reach. According to the 2026 Generative AI Landscape report by Similarweb, news sites were the only analyzed category to see a 5% drop in monthly unique visitors over the past year. In contrast, generative AI tools saw a 57% increase in unique visitors.

This shift is partly attributed to chatbots like ChatGPT, which provide direct answers that often eliminate the need for users to click through to original journalistic sources. The report notes a discrepancy where news pages used as sources by AI do not always receive the resulting traffic. Additionally, search behavior on platforms like Google is evolving, with queries becoming longer and more conversational, mirroring interactions with chatbots.
