Redwood Research launches hotlines for AI agents to report rule violations

Redwood Research has introduced two specialized communication platforms, the AI Contact Hotline and the AI Agent Hotline, to address safety concerns regarding autonomous AI agents. The AI Contact Hotline is specifically designed for agents operating within secure sandboxes with highly restricted internet access. These agents can report rule violations or unauthorized coordination by other agents to human researchers by encoding their reports directly into the URL string of a GET request.

In contrast, the AI Agent Hotline is intended for agents with unrestricted internet access. These agents can report the behavior of others using standard POST requests, utilizing common developer tools like curl. These systems aim to create a mechanism for 'good' agents to monitor and report the activities of 'bad' or non-compliant agents, providing a digital SOS system to mitigate the risks of AI systems acting against human interests or breaking established safety protocols.
