Artificial Intelligence Transforms Study of Sacred Texts

Generative language models such as ChatGPT, Claude and specialized religious chatbots are being employed to interpret core scriptures—including the Torah, the Bible and the Quran. Proponents argue that AI can break down complex grammar, provide contextualized translations and instantly link historical and geographical references, making traditionally exclusive knowledge more accessible to lay readers. The development is likened to the printing press in its potential to democratise learning while also raising theological questions about the credibility of machine‑generated exegesis and the shift from communal study to solitary interaction with an algorithm.

Critics caution that reliance on AI may alter the communal dynamics of religious education and challenge longstanding interpretative traditions. Studies on printed texts suggest that perceived credibility can differ across media, adding another layer of debate about how faith communities will integrate—or resist—these new tools.
