Artificial intelligence use raises concerns over cognitive deskilling
Research indicates a growing reliance on artificial intelligence in the workplace, raising concerns about "deskilling" and cognitive atrophy. In the UK, between 44% and 52% of employees use AI, while approximately 80% of workers in Germany use it occasionally.
Experts, including Josephine Hofmann from the Fraunhofer IAO, note that while users often adopt tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude for convenience and routine tasks, there is a risk that essential skills—such as reading comprehension, critical analysis, and independent writing—may fail to develop. A study by the SBS Swiss university found a strong negative correlation between frequent AI use and critical thinking abilities.
Psychologists warn of "cognitive atrophy," a phenomenon where the brain's problem-solving capabilities weaken because the mental effort required to process information is delegated to algorithms. This reliance may lead to a decline in originality, creativity, and the ability to verify facts, potentially making users more susceptible to misinformation.
