Artificial intelligence used in rising deepfake and identity theft scams

Criminals are increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence and deepfake technology to conduct sophisticated financial scams. These fraudulent schemes involve cloning the voices and faces of celebrities, journalists, business leaders, and government officials to promote fake investment platforms, cryptocurrency schemes, or fraudulent donation campaigns.

In Mexico, authorities have noted specific tactics such as impersonating state-owned enterprises like Pemex and CFE to sell fake energy stocks. Additionally, the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) reported at least nine cases of identity theft involving legitimate financial institutions in September. These scammers often use official logos and administrative data to deceive users into providing personal information or making advance payments.

Security experts and police agencies warn that these deepfakes are often distributed via social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Common red flags include excessive urgency, requests for sensitive data like passwords or verification codes, and promises of guaranteed high returns. Due to the use of international servers and cryptocurrency, the recovery rate for stolen funds remains low.
