Artificial islands in Szczecin Lagoon become vital bird nesting sites
Artificial islands created from sediment during the dredging of the waterway between Świnoujście and Szczecin have become vital nesting sites for rare birds in the Szczecin Lagoon. A five-year study conducted by researchers from the Polish Academy of Sciences, the West Pomeranian Nature Society, and the University of Szczecin reveals that the number of breeding species on these islands grew from seven in 2021 to 35 four years later.
The research, published in the journal ‘Estuaries and Coasts’, highlights a distinction between the two islands. The Brysna island (W22) has had sediment deposition ceased, allowing it to develop naturally, while the Śmięcka island (W28) continues to receive material from dredging operations. These islands provide essential open spaces of sand, mud, and shallow pools that are increasingly rare due to river regulation and human activity on beaches.
However, scientists warn that this ecological success may be temporary. As vegetation grows and the islands become overgrown, species that require open, unobstructed ground for nesting may abandon the sites. Maintaining these habitats may require active vegetation management and predator monitoring.
