Artisanal fishermen in Peru announce indefinite strike

Artisanal fishing representatives from the Piura and Lambayeque regions have agreed to an indefinite macro-regional strike beginning at midnight on Tuesday, October 6. The decision follows failed attempts to resolve grievances through formal channels with the Ministry of Production.

Key demands include the dismissal of the Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Eloy Barrientos, whom leaders hold responsible for poor fisheries management. The strike involves vessels and owners from major ports, including Sechura, Paita, San José, La Tortuga, and Yacila.

Additionally, the sector is protesting restrictive catch quotas for giant squid (pota). Representatives from the Paita Puerto Nuevo Mutualist Association stated that current quotas of 4 to 6 tons per vessel are insufficient for operational viability, demanding that limits be raised to 10 and 15 tons to prevent industry bankruptcy.
