Artisans in Zacatecas utilize pilgrimages and local support to preserve traditional crafts

Artisans from Puebla are utilizing religious pilgrimages to Plateros, Zacatecas, to sell traditional handmade goods and support their livelihoods. Among them is Guadalupe Vargas, a 73-year-old specialist in embroidery who has practiced the craft since age eight. Her work includes intricate napkins featuring motifs such as birds and trees, as well as complex garments that can take up to six months to complete.

In the municipality of Guadalupe, local government initiatives are also focusing on supporting the artisan community. Recent efforts include the formalization of the Padrón de Artesanos Guadalupenses and the revitalization of the Centro Platero, which hosts workshops in various techniques including jewelry, ceramics, and woodworking. New spaces, such as the Roque workshop and shop, have been established to provide artisans with dedicated areas for both production and commercialization.
