Artist and art dealer Peter Nagy dies at 67
Artist and art dealer Peter Nagy has died at the age of 67 after a long illness, according to a statement from his New Delhi-based gallery, Nature Morte.
Nagy’s career was marked by a transition from the New York East Village art scene in the 1980s to becoming a prominent figure in the Indian art market during the 1990s. As an artist, he was associated with the ‘Pictures Generation,’ utilizing appropriation to explore themes of commodification, authorship, and the reproducibility of images. His work often incorporated corporate logos and elements from art history textbooks, frequently using collage and Xerox techniques to examine the degradation of information in a media-saturated world.
Beyond his own practice, Nagy was noted for nurturing a generation of appropriation-focused artists and championing India’s position within the global art landscape.
