Artist Charles Billich faces serious health crisis in Sydney hospital

Renowned Croatian-Australian artist Charles Billich is facing serious health challenges while hospitalized at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. Following a period of significant professional success in 2025, including recognition from UNESCO, Billich’s health declined sharply in 2026.

He recently underwent a critical surgery to remove gangrene from his foot, a procedure intended to address life-threatening complications. Despite his condition, Billich has continued to create artwork from his hospital bed. His recent works include a painting of St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, which was unveiled by the Australian Prime Minister.

Billich, who emigrated from Yugoslavia to Australia in 1956, has had a career spanning nearly seven decades. His art has been exhibited at major institutions such as the Vatican and the United Nations, and he has served as an official artist for events including the Olympic Games and Formula 1 Grand Prix.
