Artist KAWS and the rise of Companion collectibles

Brian Donnelly, known professionally as KAWS, has transitioned from a 1990s New York City graffiti artist to a globally recognized figure in fine art, fashion, and collectibles. His career began with “subvertisements,” where he painted skull-and-crossbones characters over bus shelter and phone booth advertisements.

A central element of his work is the Companion, a character featuring a skull-shaped head, crossed-out “XX” eyes, and oversized gloved hands. First appearing as a vinyl toy in 1999, the Companion is noted for its emotional range, capable of appearing lonely, tired, or shy depending on its pose.

This art style has inspired a significant market for designer toys. Kawsone, for example, offers various KAWS-inspired figures that feature these iconic characteristics, catering to collectors looking for decorative pieces for homes and studios.
