Artist Luca Vitone Reaches Saint Helena on Sailing Expedition

Italian artist Luca Vitone completed a solo sailing voyage to the remote island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, arriving at Jamestown at 02:30 on 4 July 2026. The island, famed as Napoleon Bonaparte’s place of exile, has no port and is surrounded by steep cliffs, which Vitone documented in his artistic diary. Inspired by Napoleon’s childhood notes on the island’s coordinates and Jules Verne’s novel *The Children of Captain Grant*, Vitone linked the journey to his earlier work that marks personal identity through place. He previously tattooed the coordinates of the Galliera Hospital in Genoa, his birthplace, and created a diptych that juxtaposes that tattoo with the Saint Helena coordinates, exploring memory, geography and belonging. The expedition highlights the artist’s blend of navigation, history and visual art.
