Artistic initiatives merge traditional crafts with contemporary design

Various artistic initiatives are highlighting the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. In the Andean region, the brand La Vernácula has launched the ALTURAS exhibition. Developed by designer and textile artist Gabirú Villacís, the collection utilizes traditional weaving techniques from artisans in Imbabura. The project incorporates manual processes such as patchwork and embroidery to create contemporary garments that aim to preserve cultural memory and support local textile communities.

In Patagonia, the Fundacruz House of Culture is hosting a collaboration between engraver and sculptor Marcela Pizarro Mackenzie and textile designer Gabe Macede of the brand Supervaga. Pizarro’s work utilizes woodcut techniques and local materials, including artisanal felt made from carded sheep wool. Macede’s fashion proposal focuses on sustainability and the reuse of textiles, employing recycled materials and natural dyes to create pieces that address the environmental impact of the clothing industry.
