Artists call for independent mediator in Drumcree dispute
Nearly 50 artists, including Susan Sarandon, Noel Gallagher, and Adrian Dunbar, have signed an open letter calling for an independent mediator to resolve the long-standing Drumcree parade dispute in Portadown. The letter was addressed to the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Bryant.
The signatories are urging the appointment of an independent figure to assist in finding a ‘durable solution’ to the tensions surrounding the proposed Orange Order parade route from Drumcree Church toward the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road. The artists argue that any resolution must prioritize the protection and consent of the local community to ensure residents can live free from intimidation and safety concerns.
The dispute has reached a deadlock following 11 days of tension, with police maintaining barricades in the area. The issue remains a highly sensitive matter connected to Northern Ireland’s history of community division and identity.
