Artists Submit Amicus Curiae Art to Gulf of California Whale Lawsuit

Mexican artists, together with the environmental group Nuestro Futuro A.C., will present a series of artworks as amicus curiae in the historic legal case protecting the Gulf of California's whales. The pieces will be displayed from 4 to 16 August at the Centro de Cultura Digital in Mexico City, inviting the public to engage with one of the country's most significant socio‑environmental conflicts.

The lawsuit seeks to revoke environmental permits for the Saguaro Energy and AMIGO GNL liquefied natural gas projects, to have the Gulf declared a Critical Habitat, and to recognize whales as rights‑bearing subjects. Advocates argue that the LNG projects would increase maritime traffic, heighten collision risks, generate underwater noise, and threaten the Gulf’s biodiversity, which includes over 900 fish species and a large proportion of the world’s marine mammals.

Organizers ask whether “a work of art can help a judge decide to protect an ecosystem,” hoping the artistic amicus will influence the court’s decision and set new legal precedents in Mexico.
