Artūrs Butāns faces scrutiny over election education claims
Discrepancies have emerged regarding the educational qualifications listed by National Alliance Saeima deputy Artūrs Butāns in his recent election filings. In the 2018 and 2022 election documents, as well as in his initial candidacy card for the current election, Butāns listed higher education. However, in his latest candidate card published by the Central Election Commission, his highest level of education is listed as general secondary education from Riga Distance Learning Secondary School.
Butāns explained that he obtained a business management certificate in Australia, but has not yet applied for its recognition in Latvia. He stated that since obtaining the certificate in 2018, he had not pursued its formal equivalency. Following his election to the Saeima in 2022, he enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Latvia, which he expects to complete by the end of this year, with plans to pursue a master's degree next year.
The Academic Information Centre (AIC) stated that they cannot evaluate whether his Australian qualification is equivalent to higher education in Latvia without seeing the official documents. Butāns has indicated he will seek consultation from the AIC to determine if his Australian studies qualify as professional or first-level higher education.
