Artur Auernhammer rejects proposed German sugar tax

Artur Auernhammer, the agricultural policy spokesperson for the CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, has rejected the current proposal for a sugar tax. He criticized a recent position paper from the Federal Ministry of Finance, stating that the plan extends far beyond the recommendations of the Health Finance Commission and covers significantly more products than previously intended.

Auernhammer argued that the proposal appears to be an attempt at budget consolidation rather than a health initiative. He noted that while approximately 650 million euros were intended for statutory health insurance, calculations suggest the tax could generate roughly 2 billion euros in annual revenue. He insisted that these funds should not disappear into the general federal budget.

To ensure the tax effectively influences consumer behavior, Auernhammer proposed a more targeted model. This would include applying the tax only above certain container sizes and ensuring all revenue is strictly earmarked for nutritional education, prevention, and healthcare services. He warned against a blanket tax that would unfairly impact products like fruit juices, vegetable juices, and non-alcoholic beverages.
