Artur Heras, influential Valencian contemporary artist, dies at 81

Artur Heras, a prominent figure in Valencian contemporary art, has died at the age of 81. Born in Xàtiva in 1945, Heras was a central figure in the renewal of plastic arts in the Valencian Community starting in the 1960s.

As a key member of the ‘Crónica de la realidad’ movement alongside artists Manuel Boix and Rafael Armengol, Heras utilized pop art, irony, and social criticism to challenge traditional perspectives. His multidisciplinary career spanned over five decades, encompassing painting, sculpture, and design. His work was exhibited internationally in cities such as Paris, New York, Rome, and Mexico City, and is held in collections like the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and IVAM.

The Mayor of Xàtiva, Roger Cerdà, announced that the city will begin proceedings to name Heras an ‘hijo predilecto’ (favorite son) to honor his legacy. The local government also planned a minute of silence during a municipal plenary session to commemorate the artist.
