Arturo Calle blames Shein and Temu for 2,000 job losses in Colombia

Colombian entrepreneur Arturo Calle has reported the loss of approximately 2,000 jobs within his company, attributing the decline to unfair competition from international e-commerce platforms Shein and Temu.

During a public hearing before the Third Commission of the Chamber of Representatives, Calle detailed that 1,200 positions were cut at production plants in Pereira, with additional reductions occurring in administrative offices and retail stores. He noted that if sales continue to drop due to shifting consumer habits toward international platforms, further job cuts may be necessary.

Calle criticized the current tax landscape, specifically the VAT exemption on international online purchases valued under $200 and the lack of tariffs on such imports. He argued that while domestic manufacturers must meet tax obligations and social security contributions, international platforms benefit from advantages that create an uneven playing field and facilitate brand imitation.
