Arturo Medina launches follow-up stage of indigenous consultation in Chihuahua

Arturo Medina, president of the Commission of Indigenous Peoples and Communities of the Chihuahua State Congress, has launched the follow-up stage of the 2025 Prior, Free, and Informed Consultation Process. This phase involves traveling to various regions of Chihuahua to present the results of the consultation directly to indigenous communities.

The goal is to inform original peoples how their opinions, proposals, and observations from the initial consultation have influenced changes to the state's legal framework. The Commission analyzed 21 of the 27 initiatives submitted during the process.

Key legislative advancements to be presented include reforms regarding autonomy and indigenous justice, specifically recognizing indigenous legal resolutions and internal normative systems. Other measures include guaranteeing interpreters in medical care and government agencies, strengthening protections for indigenous women and girls, and implementing intercultural health programs. Additionally, the reforms address education and social inclusion through multilingual and inclusive education and support for indigenous persons with disabilities.
