Artvin murder investigation solves 30-year-old cold case

Turkish authorities have solved a 30-year-old cold case involving the disappearance of Nigar Bilgin in the Şavşat district of Artvin. The investigation was triggered after officials noticed Bilgin had not applied for a new identity card, leading to the discovery that she had been missing for three decades without any official missing person reports or digital footprint.

Following an investigation by the Gendarmerie Crime Investigation Team (JASAT), authorities identified Bilgin’s husband, Z. B., as a suspect. Investigators discovered that Z. B. had been living alone in a cave in a forested area outside the village for approximately 20 years. During a site inspection conducted with a prosecutor, law enforcement recovered bone fragments and clothing pieces believed to belong to Bilgin.

Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi announced that Z. B. has been arrested for the murder. Additionally, legal measures were applied to the suspect's siblings: A. B. received a ban on traveling abroad, and M. B. was placed under house arrest.
