Artvin siblings Kemal and Süheyla Köse live independently despite visual impairment

In Bereket village, located in the Ardanuç district of Artvin, siblings Kemal Köse (74) and Süheyla Köse (56) have lived independently for over half a century despite being born visually impaired. The pair manages their daily rural life through a division of labor: Kemal handles animal care, wood chopping, and garden work, while Süheyla manages the household, cooking, and milking.

Kemal navigates his environment by memory, including walking the 17-kilometer route to the district center. Süheyla pursued a lifelong dream of education, starting adult training in Ankara at age 36. She completed middle and high school before earning a degree in Public Relations and Promotion from Atatürk University at age 50.

Their late father, Latif Köse, played a crucial role in Süheyla's education by reading textbooks to her during her school years. Following her graduation, Süheyla visited her father's grave with her diploma. Their brother, Oktay Köse, has documented Süheyla's life story in a children's book titled ‘Süsü’ to serve as an inspiration for others.
