Artxanda tunnel closure to impact 16,000 daily vehicles in Bilbao

The La Salve Txorierri tunnel in Artxanda will close on November 2 for a comprehensive renovation of its 1.2-kilometer stretch. The closure is expected to last five months, with a scheduled reopening on April 2, 2027.

On working days, approximately 16,000 vehicles use the tunnel, increasing to 9,000 during weekends. This closure will affect primary routes connecting the metropolitan area, the airport, and the Technology Park. Traffic will be redistributed across other access points to Bilbao, impacting roughly 8% of the city's total daily vehicle volume.

Local authorities are currently working on reorganizing Bizkaibus services and public transport alternatives. The Bizkaibus urban bus service will modify lines that utilize the tunnel, including connections between Bilbao, the airport, and the Technology Park.
