Aruba approves AIOF investment budget amid coalition friction
The Aruban government has approved the first budget for the General Investment and Development Fund (AIOF) for the 2026 and 2027 period. During a public presentation in San Nicolas, Minister Gerlien Croes outlined a national investment agenda aimed at transforming national priorities into concrete projects to enhance the country's sustainability and quality of life.
However, the approval process revealed significant political tension within the governing coalition. While the budget passed with 11 votes in favor and 7 against, the debate highlighted concerns regarding transparency and resource management. Member of Parliament Hendrik Tevreden noted a lack of cohesion, specifically citing the decision by MP Mike de Meza to abstain from the final vote following a motion regarding Minister Croes.
The opposition and the Council of Advice have raised questions concerning the legal foundation of the fund, the control of fund transfers, and the lack of an integrated investment plan. Critics argue that project selection lacks clear criteria and effective parliamentary oversight, questioning how specific projects are prioritized and evaluated.
