Aruba government reaffirms ban on e-steps in public traffic
Aruba's Minister of Justice, Arthur Dowers, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to restoring order regarding the management of e-steps (electric scooters) on the island. He stated that the official position remains unchanged: e-steps are not permitted in traffic or on public roads under current legislation.
Dowers noted that the current situation is the result of years of insufficient control and enforcement. He explained that the current administration inherited a scenario where activities lacking necessary legal authorizations continued to operate, causing uncertainty for both businesses and users. He emphasized that the long-term operation of an activity does not automatically grant a legal right to continue if it contravenes existing laws.
The decision to prohibit e-steps was based on recommendations from the Road Safety Commission due to serious concerns regarding road safety and the fact that Aruba's infrastructure is not adapted for these vehicles. While acknowledging that legal proceedings are currently underway, Dowers expressed confidence that the judicial process will provide the necessary clarity to enforce the law and protect human life.
